STRATIFICATION:
New Work by Hyunsook Cho, Dennis Doran, Mariah Anne Johnson, and James Zver

On View: May 10 – June 20, 2008

Photos from the Opening Reception

Hyunsook Cho (North Hollywood) received her MFA from California State University Long Beach and has been exhibiting her art in California and South Korea for almost three decades.

In her work she seeks to bridge the cultural gaps between her native and adopted cultures, often exploring a single theme using many different media.

In her Houses series on view in this exhibition, she explores both the physical and psychological aspects of house and home in paper collage and fired ceramic pieces.

Cho’s work was most recent seen in Healing: A Cultural Exploration at The Craft and Folk Art Museum and Surface Tension at the Korean Cultural Center.

Dennis Doran (Buena Park) earned his bachelor’s degree in photography from California State University Long Beach. Working with digital media he uses photographs to both record and comment upon the tagging and signage found in his urban environment.

The series on exhibit, Fractured Vision 3, explores visual relationships between images of signage, tags, stickers and other documented vestiges of the urban dweller. An additional layer of humanity is added with the inclusion of human silhouettes and paper doll graphics.

Doran’s most recent exhibitions in the Los Angeles area include Electrosthetic at Cypress College Gallery and meshed: Graffiti Art at Santa Ana College Gallery.

Mariah Anne Johnson (Los Angeles) received her MFA in painting at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne. A native of Little Rock, Arkansas, Johnson’s art reflects her interest in storytelling, narrative, and memory.

Working with hundreds of secondhand bedsheets she constructs sculptural arrangements, a process she describes as akin to creating paintings with brush and canvas.

The interaction of colors, patterns, and shapes create aesthetically interesting art objects out of materials that are also infused with the imagined histories and uses (sleeping, housekeeping, etc.) of the original owners.

Johnson’s work was most recently seen in Migration Study at Phantom Galleries LA.

James Zver (Los Angeles) earned a BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from Cornell University. Over the course of his career Zver has worked in many media, including painting, photography, sculpture and collage.

His most recent work has focused on wood constructions, in the form of wall reliefs and free standing sculptures, and paper collage that incorporates pastels, charcoal and india ink.

These two bodies of work have much in common at first glance however Zver explains that his collages “are less about the abrupt shifts of surface and unexpected juxtapositions” found in his sculpture “and more involved with poetic associations, implications, and suggestion.”

Zver has exhibited widely in New York and Los Angeles.
