Artist Submissions

The Brand Library Art Galleries is accepting submissions from artists, artist groups and curators between November 1, 2007 and January 31, 2008 for the 2009 exhibition season.

The mission of the Brand Library Art Galleries is to offer visitors a professional gallery experience by showcasing works of established and emerging artists from California—particularly from Southern California—that educate, enlighten, challenge, and enrich people’s lives.

Original work in all media will be considered. Work submitted must be current (produced within the last four years). We are particularly interested in complementing two-dimensional work with three-dimensional sculpture, ceramics, multi-media installations, etc. that make use of the galleries’ floor and air space.

To be considered, the artist/artist representative/curator submits materials including but not limited to:

  • Letter of introduction/cover letter
  • Artist statement
  • A resume outlining the artist’s or curator’s career and education, or a description of the artist group including mission, membership and exhibition history
  • Completed and signed submission form
  • Visual representations of the works of art in slide, printed or digital format. Websites cannot be used as a substitute. Acceptable digital formats are JPG and TIF. Photoshop files (.PSD / .PDD) will not be accepted. Portfolios of original materials will not be accepted.
  • Self-Addressed and Stamped Envelope (SASE) for return of materials by mail. (Submissions without envelopes or with envelopes lacking proper postage will not be returned.)
Submission materials may be mailed or hand delivered to:
Gallery Manager
Brand Library Art Galleries
1601 West Mountain Street
Glendale, CA 91201
Tue & Thu 12-9 pm / Wed 10 am-6 pm / Fri & Sat 10 am-5 pm
NO PHONE CALLS OR WALK-IN INTERVIEWS WILL BE ACCEPTED

Process
Submissions will be reviewed in February, and notification letters should be sent by the end of March. The Gallery Manager will invite selected artists, curators, or groups for an interview. As part of the interview process, the artist, curator, or group will be asked to bring samples of the artist(s) work to the Brand Library Art Galleries. If the works are too large to be conveniently moved, the Gallery Manager may arrange to visit the artist’s studio. Within four weeks of the interview, the artist, curator, or group will either be assigned an exhibition date or the submission materials will be returned. The notification and interview timeline is subject to change at the discretion of Brand Library Art Galleries staff.

Artists, curators, or groups not selected for the 2009 exhibition season may re-apply in the next submission cycle.

Limits

  • Solo artists or artist groups who have exhibited at the Brand Library Art Galleries are not eligible for resubmission for four years.
  • Works previously displayed in the Brand Library Art Galleries are not eligible to be shown again. This includes works exhibited in single artist shows and group shows.
  • No preferential treatment is given to individual members of the Associates of Brand Library, City of Glendale employees, or art associations that have previously exhibited at Brand.
Publicity
As part of the ongoing publicity for Brand Library events, press releases are sent to local papers and press organizations. Brand Library Art Galleries is also listed in the monthly Southern California visual arts publication ArtScene and Artweek, a monthly publication dedicated to contemporary art on the West Coast. Postcard announcements are sent to the Brand Library Art Galleries mailing list, which includes galleries, educational institutions, libraries, artists, and community members. Electronic exhibition announcements are also sent via email to the Brand Library Events list (approximately 1,000 recipients) and the Glendale Public Library Events of the Month list, in addition to various other visual arts-related list serves. Details about exhibitions are posted on the Brand Library website and a variety of other Southern California event websites. Exhibitions are also announced publicly at monthly Glendale Arts & Culture Commission meetings which are broadcast on GTV6, the award-winning government access cable channel for the City of Glendale. As a courtesy, 150 of the announcements are provided to individual artists, 500 to groups. The artist, curator or group is responsible for mailing their copies of the postcard announcements. Any additional publicity or announcements are the responsibility of the artist, curator or group. All additional publicity materials must be approved by the Gallery Manager prior to distribution.
