One of the largest and best collections of books about felines, especially domestic cats (both purebred and alley cats), is available for use in the Central Library's Special Collections Room.
This outstanding collection has drawn visitors, telephone and mail inquiries from all over the United States and Europe, as well as been featured in the Glendale News Press in an article entitled, "Purr-ient Interest."
The beginnings of the collection were given to the Library by the Jewel City Cat Club. In addition to the large number of books, the collection consists of paintings of champion cats, over 400 photographs by Hans Bomskow, posters, cards, stamps and stud books back to the early 1900's.
Generally, the material in the collection is aimed at the serious breeder of cats. In addition to stud books, there are histories of breeds, feline medical books and books on genetics. Cats in fiction, in magic, in music, in art and in religion are included, plus photobooks of cats, books on how to photograph cats, recipe books for cats, zodiac signs for cats, poetry, literary anthologies, and children's books about cats. Many books are old and rare.
While books, photographs and pamphlets are predominant in the collection, it also contains periodicals and show catalogs from as early as 1890. Books range in size from one that is 1 1/2 inches square to one that is more than 24 inches in height.
All materials must be used in the room.
